RAT. WEDDING. BOW.
RAT. WEDDING. BOW.
RAT. WEDDING. BOW.
Making my feverish brain slow down long enough to untangle itself from the circular mantra of ratweddingbowweedingratratbowratweddingrat is proving DIFFICULT IN THE EXTREME, but going with my first instincts here, I'm going to say Empty House (purely because it follows the Fall, lord knows what the rat refers to) and Sign of Four for the wedding, and His Last Bow for bow. There are other stories in which weddings and bows are mentioned, but I'm going with these because they're the biggish ones, and therefore the most likely.
But opinions? Theories? Conjectures? Uncontrollable weepings? There's lots of room for interpretation on this one, where there was absolutely none for the second season - it was perfectly obvious what woman, hound and fall referred to. But rat? My mind goes straight to the Giant Rat of Sumatra, which is ridiculous because that wasn't even a story.
My emotions are all jumbled up between AAAHHHHHH WORDS WE HAVE WORDS MOFFAT GAVE US WORDS and BUT WHAT DO THEY MEAN I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY MEAN and basically I'm just flailing and hand-wringing all over the place.

aaahahaha I really love Anderson
And I couldn't think of what the Rat would be, but the first ep have to be related to The Empty House.

Rat... I think everyone who has read the stories wants the 'Giant Rat of Sumatra', even though it's not an actual written story. It's got to be related to 'The Empty House' in some way, because Sherlock deserves a triumphant and dramatic return. Maybe it helps explain how he survived the fall? Or maybe about Sebastian Moran... Wasn't there a whole thing about Moran and a tiger (or am I going completely insane)? Maybe it was changed to a rat? This one is tricky...
Wedding. My first thought is instinctively of Miss Mary Morstan, and it's probably many others' thought too. I mean, Watson gets married in the stories, so it's a logical conclusion. I don't recall there being many other important weddings in the stories, except maybe that one time Holmes got engaged, or something like that? Anyway, Mary Morstan's appearance signifies 'The Sign of Four', unless they decided to mix in elements from a different story... I am hoping for it being Mary. I like Mary.
Bow... There's a set of stories called 'His Last Bow' but that's a set of stories. There's also a story in that set called 'His Last Bow', which involves spying as opposed to mystery and is the last story, involving Sherlock Holmes coming out of his beekeeping retirement to catch a spy for WWI... And yet, my friends have said that Season 3 is supposed to end on a cliffhanger, which makes basing the episode off the last tale in the entire series make little sense... Maybe the episode will be only loosely based off of a story again, kind of like the way 'The Great Game' was. Or maybe the word "bow" is referring to another story of which the bow wasn't as prominent as to be the title. Because Moffat is a troll and making it 'The Last Bow' would really be too easy.
Ugh, so little to go on. I feel like rereading all of the stories now because I'm sure to be missing something. I'm glad you gave a place to discuss this though. I've been avoiding Tumblr as of late to try and break my addiction to it, which means I'm short a discussion venue.
